Tony "Touchdown" Simmons (born December 8, 1974) is a former American football and Canadian football player. He is currently coaching the Békéscsaba Raptors in Hungary.[2] He played in the National Football League for the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and most recently the New York Giants. In 2005, he signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. In both the 2005 and 2006 CFL seasons, he had strong starts but suffered season-ending injuries after only a handful of games. Had a strong 2007 season and was released in mid September 2007 for personal reasons. Showed up again on the Chicago Slaughter roster in 2009. April 2011, inducted into St. Rita High School Hall of Fame.

High school

Simmons attended St. Rita High School on Chicago's south side. In 1993 he was named Chicago Sun-Times Prep Athlete of the Year for his participation in both football and track. He won the state championship in the 100 and 200 meter dash with a time of 10.5 seconds and 21.58 seconds as a senior, respectively. He shares a distinction with two other NFL players that have also attended both St. Rita and the University of Wisconsin–Madison: former high school and college teammate Ahmad Merritt, and former Chicago Bear Dennis Lick. Simmons and Merritt both played and caught touchdown passes in World Bowl IX. St. Rita High School is part of the Chicago Catholic League.

College career

Simmons played college football at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He left Wisconsin as the school's all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 23 (this record has since been broken by Lee Evans). Simmons was drafted in the second round (52nd overall pick) of the 1998 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Simmons also ran college track at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He left Wisconsin as the leading fastest 200m Outdoor times (20.44) and 3rd 100m Outdoor times (10.29). All American 100m in 1996. Big Ten 100m Champion in 1997 (10.29) and 200m Champion in 1996 (20.44). Helped Wisconsin win the coveted Big Ten Triple Crown Championship(cross country, indoor, outdoor track) during the years of 1995-1997.

Finished the season with 32 catches for 538 yards and caught seven touchdowns ... He finished sixth in receiving yards and second in receiving touchdowns ... Recorded two touchdown receptions three times during the season ... Led all receivers with 141 yards on nine catches, including two touchdowns vs. Rhein in Week Three ... Snared the game-winning 19-yard touchdown reception for the win in over-time against Rhein ... Led all receivers with 120 yards receiving on three catches, including two touchdowns (34 and 74 yards) vs. Amsterdam in Week Four ... Recorded two touchdown passes for the third time during the 2001 season, while catching four passes for 100 yards versus Frankfurt in Week Seven.

NFL career

Simmons played 5 seasons as a pro, playing with the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and most recently the New York Giants. Amassing 58 receptions for 998 yards, 6 TDs and averaged 20.8 yards per game. As a returner, 12 returns for 241 yards and averaged 20.1 yards per return.

Football in Denmark

The 10th of march 2010, Tony Simmons joined the Danish football team Triangle Razorbacks.[3] Simmons is the first player from the NFL to join a Danish football team. He will also function as the teams offensive coordinator, special teams coach and player. TEAM RECORD: 11-1 Led the league in scoring with 466 points. Mermaid Bowl finalist. Offense Avg. 42.3 pts a game. Played with Shane Jackson as the starting QB for the Triangle Razorbacks in Vejle, Denmark. Tony was a WR/OC as well as Special Teams Coordinator and Strength/Speed Coach. Team finished the regular season 10-0. Won our only playoff game and lost in the final.

Football in Hungary

The 20th of January 2011, Tony Simmons joined the Hungarian football team Békéscsaba Raptors as Head Coach. Tony will also assume the duties of OC, DC, Special Teams Coordinator and Strength/Speed Coach and player. With the help of Ryan Long, an American soccer player turned football coach, who helped the Raptors get to Division I of the Hungarian Football League. Led the first team in Hungarian History from a new Div. 1 team to the Championship. Started as a Div.2 all running team to a Div. 1 Spread Offense Championship team. Team finished the regular season 4-2. Playoff 2-0. Final game to be played without a coach. Led special team in the league with 7 KOR TDs and 5 PR TDs. Offense Avg. 25.3 pts/game. Defense pts allowed 18.3 pts/game. Won the first round playoff game 16-6. Won the Semi final game 16-14.
